Leaves Over 400 Descendants

MRS. AMELIA PEACHEY OF BELLEVILLE, PA. DIES AT AGE 99

Belleville, Pa. — Mrs. Amelia Peachey, oldest resident of the large Amish and Mennonite community here, died Sept. 27 at the age of 99 years, two months and 27 days. The immediate cause of death was a hip fracture which she suffered six days earlier.

The widow of Jonas Z. Peachey, who died 36 years ago, Grandmother Peachey had the unusual experience of living to see the number of her direct descendants increase to more than 400. She was the mother of ten children eight of whom survive her. Her grandchildren number 65, great-grandchildren 300, and great-great grandchildren, 29. Six of the children are over 70 years of age.

Mrs. Peachey had been a member of the Amish church since her youth. She made her home with a daughter, Katie, on West Main Street in Belleville and was up and around until she fell and fractured her hip. She assisted with household chores, and always helped spade the garden until this year.

Friends and relatives from far and near attended the funeral services, held at the home of a grandson, Sylvanus Peachey. Bishop John Renno and Chris Peachey officiated.

AMANDA Y. PEACHEY

Amelia Y. Peachey was born July 1, 1858. She lived to the ripe old age of 99 years, two months and 27 days.

She joined the Amish church in her youth and was a faithful member until the end of her life's journey. She was married to Jonas Z. Peachey Jan. 11, 1877. Her husband preceded her 36 years ago.

To this union were born 10 children. One died in infancy and her son Simon died 22 years ago.

She is survived by eight children, Kore E. of Springs, Pa., Salome, wife of Jacob C. Yoder, Sadie, wife of David Spicher, John Y. of Belleville, Salina, wife of Jacob Kanagy of Stuarts Draft, Va., Katie at home, Lizzie, widow of Noah Yoder, Jemima, wife of Iddo Bender of Belleville, R. D. Also surviving are 65 grandchildren, and 29 great-great-grandchildren, a total of over 400 descendants.

She was in good health nearly all her life. Her mind was good to the end. She loved company and could converse freely, was kindhearted, had many friends and was loved by all.

She broke her hip on Sept. 21 and passed away six days later. She suffered much pain which she bore patiently until the last evening of her life, when the pain left and she peacefully fell asleep. She never complained of her long life nor wished to live longer, but was resigned to the Lord's will.

Funeral services were held at the home of her grandson, Sylvanus Peachey, formerly her farm home, and were largely attended by friends and relatives. The services were conducted by Christ. Peachey and John Renno. Interment was made in Locust Grove Cemetery.
