Retired North Dakota Minister Dies While On Visit in Montana
Munich, N. D. — Memorial services for Rev. Hellmuth F. Ortmann, 77, retired minister of the Northern District Conference, were held July 31 at the Salem Mennonite Church here.
Rev. Ortmann died in his sleep while visiting his eldest daughter, Mrs. Peter Thiessen, at Warroad, Minn.
A native of Marion, S. D., he served as pastor of the Salem congregation here for 26 years, beginning in 1929. He was active in evangelistic work and served on the district Evangelization Committee for many years. He was largely responsible for the founding of Bethany Bible School which operated here from 1938 to 1955.
From 1955 to 1958 Rev. and Mrs. Ortmann shared in the ministry of the Minfield Children's Home near Auk Bay, Alaska. Mrs. Ortmann, the former Helena Tieszen, preceded her husband in death by about one month.

In June my sister and I attended funeral services at Munich, N. D. for our sister-in-law, Mrs. Hellmuth Ortmann. As we visited with our brother, we never thought: "This is our last visit together." But only four weeks and eight days later, on July 27, the Lord took him also to the Heavenly Home. He died in his sleep, and was found by his son-in-law, Pete Thiessen of Warroad, Minn. where he had stayed following his wife's death. One can rejoice, while sorrowing at the same time, for those who have overcome and continue "to occupy" for our Lord. — Adelina B. Ortmann.

HELLMUTH F. ORTMANN
Hellmuth F. Ortmann was born on Dec. 23, 1895, near Marion, S.D., son of F. C. and Maria (Schmidt) Ortmann. He recently went to Warroad, Minn. to visit with his eldest daughter and family. On the morning of July 27 he could not be awakened and was found to have passed away sometime during the early morning hours. He reached the age of 76.
He spent his childhood and youth on the farm six miles northwest of Marion, S.D. He received his grade school education in a rural school near Marion. He also attended the Freeman Academy.
Hellmuth was baptized in June 1914 by Rev. D. P. Tieszen and was received into the Bethesda Mennonite Church near Marion.
In 1915 he met Helena Tieszen. They were married by her uncle, Rev. D. P. Tieszen, on June 7, 1917. This union was blessed with four daughters and one son. It was during this time that Hellmuth was voted by the Bethesda congregation to serve as an evangelist. The Ortmanns then felt God was calling them to further Christian training, so in 1925-26 they moved to Minneapolis, Minn. where he attended Northwestern Bible school.
Between 1926 and 1929 the Ortmanns lived near Marion. In 1929 through the Northern District Conference Evangelization Committee, the Salem Mennonite Church of Munich, N.D. called them to become their pastor. They accepted the call and the family moved to Munich on April 15, 1929. On July 7, 1929 Hellmuth was ordained an elder in the church by Rev. J. A. Thieszen. The Ortmanns shared their ministry, pastoring the Salem church for over 26 years.
Besides the local ministry Pastor Ortmann served on the Evangelization Committee of the Northern District Conference for a number of years. He also supplied other pulpits in the area and held meetings in other Northern District conference churches. He was largely responsible for the founding of the Bethany Bible School at Munich (1938-1955).
After their years of serving they continued to reside in the Munich community. From 1955 until 1963 the Ortmanns enjoyed sharing in the ministry of the Minfield Children's Home near Auk Bay, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helena, four brothers, and two sisters. Those remaining to mourn his departure are; three brothers, August of Glendive, Mont., Andrew of Dolton, S.D., Arthur of Warroad, Minn.; two sisters, Anna and Adelina, Marion, S.D.; four daughters, Martha, Mrs. Peter Thiessen of Warroad, Minn., Hilda, Mrs. Jacob Hoffman, Auk Bay, Alaska, Mildred, Mrs. Lewis Dick, and Mathilda, Mrs. Leverne [sic Laverne] Dick, both of Munich, N.D.; and one son, Albert of Billings, Mont.; 32 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way" (Psalm 37:23). This was a favorite Bible verse of our former pastor, Rev. H. F. Ortmann, 76, who died in his sleep on July 27 while visiting at the home of his daughter, the Peter Thiessen family of Warroad, Minn. Bro. Ortmann, although retired was often called upon to share the Word in churches of this area as well as teach Sunday school classes. Funeral services, held July 31 in the Salem Church, were well attended. Pastor Wilbur Schmidt and Rev. Arthur Ortmann, a brother of the deceased, of Warroad, Minn., preached. A male quartet from the Salem Church and one from the Rosehill M. B. Church as well as a male trio from the Swiss Church at Alsen brought messages in song.
