ABRAHAM G. NICKEL

Abraham G. Nickel was born on Aug. 31, 1888 near Marion, S. D. to Gerhard and Kathryn Boese Nickel. He went to be with his Lord on April 17, 1970.

A few years of elementary education were received in the Marion public school, after which he helped his parents on the farm. As a youth he attended the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church with his parents. In 1909 he was baptized and taken into the membership of the Bethesda Mennonite Church near Marion.

He was married to Elizabeth Tieszen on Nov. 11, 1909. The following year they moved to Morse, Sask. where they homesteaded. They returned to the United States in 1913 and farmed in the Marion vicinity until 1958 when they retired to their home in Marion. Due to failing health, they took up residence at the Tieszen Home last September. They had the privilege of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary last November.

Abraham will be remembered by his family and friends for his cheerful, sociable nature.

In the past seven months he underwent three major surgeries. He suffered a heart attack while still in the hospital recuperating from his last surgery.

Surviving are his widow, Elizabeth; four daughters, Evelyn, Mrs. Leonard Wetkowski of St. Joseph, Mich., Selma, Mrs. Dale Rozinski of Benton Harbor, Mich., Esther, Mrs. Lloyd Kauffman of Hwalien, Taiwan, and Violet, Mrs. Curt Schwartz of Marion; one son, Alvin, of Marion; four sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Adina (Mrs. Lloyd Deckert) and one granddaughter preceded him in death.
