NICOLAS JACOB NEUFELD
Dr. Nicholas J. Neufeld, a faithful servant of God and the Mennonite people of Manitoba, was called home on October 31 in his 81st year. He was born on June 2, 1897 in Rosenort, Russia. After baptism in 1910 he joined the Davlekanovo Mennonite Brethren Church. Graduation as a medical doctor at Simferopol in the Crimea followed. On August 25, 1923 he married Susanna Loewen, a marriage blessed with three sons and one daughter. The Neufelds emigrated to Canada in 1924, where Dr. Neufeld earned his medical degree at the University of Manitoba while mastering the English language. Short periods of medical practice in Lowe Farm and Altona, Manitoba followed.
In 1929 the Neufelds moved to Winnipeg and joined the Southend Mennonite Brethren Church. Dr. Neufeld became the co-founder of the Concordia Society, a prepaid medical services plan for Mennonites that was unique in the province of Manitoba. In 1935 he took his young family to Europe for a year, where he pursued further medical studies. On his return to Canada he resumed his work at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, faithfully and selflessly fulfilling his medical responsibilities until retirement in 1973. Dr. Neufeld's commitment to the welfare of Mennonites led him to co-found the Crosstown Credit Union and serve as its president from 1944 to 1960.
N. J. Neufeld was also a servant of the Mennonite Brethren Church. He served on the Arbeitskomitee (trustees) of the Southend Church and other committees. Later in life he was a member of the Portage Ave. Mennonite Brethren congregation. It was in this latter church that a funeral service for Dr. Neufeld was held on November 3, with pastor H. H. Voth officiating.
Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife, Susanna; three sons and their wives , Nick, John and Ernest; one daughter, Margaret, and her family; 16 grandchildren; one brother, John; and many friends and former patients.
