Wife of Columbiana, O. Pastor Called by Death

Berne, Ind. – Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie (Sprunger) Neuenschwander, 75, wife of Rev. A. J. Neuenschwander of Columbiana, Ohio, were held June 26 at the First Mennonite Church of Berne.

Mrs. Neuenschwander, a native of the Berne community, died June 23 at the home in Columbiana where her husband is pastor of the Hope Mennonite Church. A memorial service was held Thursday at Columbiana, after which the body was sent here for final services and burial.

A former teacher here, Mrs. Neuenschwander was active in church work in the various congregations where her husband served as pastor. for nine years she was secretary of the Central District women’s Missionary Society.

MRS. BESSIE NEUENSCHWANDER

Mrs. Bessie Sprunger Neuenschwander, 75, wife of Rev. Andrew J. Neuenschwander, died unexpectedly in her home at Columbiana, Ohio at 12:15 p.m. on June 23. Death was due to a heart attack. Mrs. Neuenschwander has not been in the best of health for some time, and a few weeks ago was hospitalized for tests and observation.

She was a native of Berne, Ind. Rev. and Mrs. Neuenschwander had been living in Columbiana for the last three years. Prior to this they lived at Wadsworth, Ohio for many years. She was prominent in church work in the various churches pastored by her husband. She also was active in conference work and for nine years served as conference secretary of the Women’s Missionary Society. A former school teacher, she attended Bluffton College one year.

Mrs. Neuenschwander was born in Berne, on Feb. 23, 1889, a daughter of Christian C. and Rosina Reusser Sprunger. She was married Sept. 2, 1917, at Wadsworth, Ohio.

Surviving are the husband, two sons, Dr. Robert S. Neuenschwander, West Covina, Calif., and Gordon Neuenschwander, Wexford, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. A. C. (Ruth) Ramseyer, Smithville, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, B. Franklin Sprunger and Victor Sprunger, both of Berne, Ind., and Paul Sprunger of Milwaukee, Wis.; and two sisters, Mrs. Rana Reusser , Berne, and Mrs. M. A. (Gertrude) Thomas, Union City, Ind. Three children, a sister, Ella, and three brothers, Oswald, Asa and Wesley Sprunger, preceded in death.

Services were held June 25 at Columbiana and on June 26 at the First Mennonite Church of Berne, where Rev. Gordon Neuenschwander officiated. Burial was in the M. R. E. Cemetery at Berne.
