Death Claims Retired Missionary to India

Bluffton, Ohio. — Samuel T. Moyer, 78, who served on the India mission field under the General Conference Mennonite Church for 36 years, died in his sleep early Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Mennonite Memorial Home here.

A memorial service was held Tuesday forenoon at Diller Funeral Home, with Rev. Stanley Bohn in charge, and final services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Mennonite Church of Berne, Ind. Burial was made at the side of his wife, the former Metta Habegger of Berne.

Rev. and Mrs. Moyer first sailed for India in 1920. They pioneered a new work in the jungles and established the Jagdeeshpur station. Rev. Moyer developed a new pattern of church building and evangelism by teaching Christian laymen to teach the Bible to new converts. During his last term, 1948-1956, he was principal of Janzen Memorial School. From 1956 to 1967 he served as pastor of the Bethel Mennonite Church, Pekin, Ill.

A native of Lansdale, Pa., Rev. Moyer held a B.S. degree in agronomy from Pennsylvania State College. Later he received the B.D. degree from Witmarsum Seminary at Bluffton, and also did graduate work at the Biblical Seminary of New York and New York University.

Survivors include one son, Theodore Moyer and family of Pandora.
