Aged Amish Bishop Killed On Highway

HORSE AND BUGGY HIT BY LARGE TRUCK NEAR MIDDLEBURY, IND.

Goshen, Ind. — Funeral services were held at the David S. Yoder residence near Middlebury last Sunday afternon [sic] for Moses M. Miller, 80-year-old bishop of the West Forks Amish District at Middlebury who was instantly killed in an accident on U. S. Highway 20.

The aged bishop was traveling west on the highway en route to Middlebury when his horse and buggy were struck by a large tractor-trailer outfit going in the same direction. The truck driver reported the horse reared up and came into the path of his truck. The horse was instantly killed also.

Bishop Miller was married to Elizabeth Yoder on March 17, 1898. She survives with their six daughters and four sons and a number of grandchildren.

The funeral services were in charge of Bishop Felty Yoder and Harry Stutzman.

Nearly 2,000 Attend Funeral for Bishop

Lagrange, Ind. — One of the largest funerals ever held in Indiana took place at the David S. Yoder farm on Sunday, July 27, as nearly 2,000 persons came to pay last respects to Bishop Moses M. Miller, 80, of the Amish church. States from New York to Illinois were represented, and the house and barn as well as the farm yard were filled to capacity.

Bishop Miller was instantly killed July 17 when his horse and buggy were struck by a large semi-trailer on U. S. Highway 20.

Bro. Miller was ordained as a minister in 1907 and to the office of bishop in 1923. He was widely known and respected in the Amish church.
