Aged Indiana Bishop, Church Leader Dies
SERVICES FOR BISHOP D. D. MILLER, 90, HELD AT MIDDLEBURY, IND.
Middlebury, Ind. — Funeral services for Daniel D. Miller, 90, bishop of the (Old) Mennonite church since 1906 and former leader in the educational and missions program of the church, were held Sunday, Jan. 23 at the Forks Mennonite church near here.
The services were in charge of Early Bontrager and J. D. Graber of Elkhart, and burial was made in Forest Grove cemetery.
Bishop Miller passed away Jan. 19 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Augsberger, after an illness of ten years.
Born in La Grange county Nov. 1864, he was ordained as a minister of the Forks church in 1891. In early life he was also a public school teacher for almost 20 years.
His service to the Mennonite Church included many years as a member of the Mennonite Board of Education and the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, of which he was president from 1920-1936, financial agent 1921-37, and general treasurer for some years. During World War I he was a member of a delegation sent to Washington, D. C. in behalf of C.O.s, and served as general treasurer of the War Sufferers Relief Committee after the war.
Surviving children are Orie O. of Akron, Pa., Ernest E. of Goshen, Samuel S. of Kouts, Wilbur W. of Columbus, O., Mrs. Ben Schertz of Flanagan, Ill., Mrs. Arthur Augsberger, Mrs. Ray A. Yoder of Kalona, Iowa, Mrs. Chauncey Oesch of Middlebury, and Mrs. William E. Jennings of Worthington, O.
