Turmoil In Kenya Over Slaying Of Official

Political turmoil and rioting broke out in Kenya as result of the slaying of a leading government official in Nairobi.

Assassinated as he was stepping out of a downtown drug store was Tom Mboya, Minister for Economic Development and Planning in the Kenyan government.

Violence broke out between Mboya's Luo tribe and the Kikuyu tribe of which President Jomo Kenyatta is a member of. In Nairobi, thousands demonstrated in the streets and in Kisumu on the banks of Lake Victoria 200 miles northwest of Nairobi Luo tribesmen stoned stores owned by Kikuyus. The Kikuyus are the largest tribe in Kenya and the majority ethnic group in parliament.

The identity of Mboya's assassin was unknown.
