NOAH H. MARTIN

Noah H. Martin was born to John W. and Amanda (Horst) Martin on Dec. 15, 1878 in Washington County, Md. He was second in a family of 14 children. He attended elementary school and continued his education through much reading.

He accepted Christ at the age of 20 and was baptized in the Reiffs Mennonite Church. His father died before he was 21 years old.

On Aug. 23, 1904 he was married to Fannie Eshelman. They transferred their membership to Millers Mennonite Church to which he belonged the rest of his life.

After working several years in the Ried store, they started farming nearby on her father's farm. Six weeks later a disastrous fire took the barn and all stock, making it necessary to start over completely.

To this union were born four children. The second and third children died at about one year old, leaving two sons who survive their father.

A highlight in his life was a trip to Oregon for General Conference in 1927. They bought a home in Paramount and moved there in 1945. He did light work on his sons' farms until several years ago. He spent much time reading, and read through the bible 64 times in his lifetime. He was gifted in making the Bible live and applying it to life. He wrote some articles and poems for the “Gospel Herald” and was Review correspondent for several years. He went through the lot for minister and deacon.

About three years ago his eyesight began to fail. He was bedfast for about a week in December. He recovered enough to be up and around at Christmas, then became weaker and passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 1963, having attained the age of 84 years, 20 days.

Funeral services were scheduled at Paraise [sic Paradise] church by Moses Horst, Samuel Martin and Irvin Shank.

He leaves to mourn his departure his companion, with whom he shared life's joys and sorrows for 58 years; two sons, Jacob R. and Preston E. of Hagerstown, Md.; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Abram and Henry, five sisters, Amanda, Mary and Leah, Mrs. Henry Hege, all of Hagerstown, Fannie, Mrs. David Frey of Chambersburg, Pa., Esther, Mrs. Clarence Martin of Gettysburg, Pa., and many relatives and friends. — The Family.
