ATTEMPTED RESCUE FATAL TO SWIMMER

Sarasota, Fla., June 12. — Attempting to save his wife's sister, who had gotten into deep water, Loanard [sic Leonard] Martin of Harrisonburg, Va., 25-year-old musician, drowned at Liko Beach here today. The woman, Mrs. John Garber, was rescued by Gordon Higel, Sarasota, summoned to the scene from a distant casino. Higel arrived too late to save the man.

Mrs. Garber's husband, who does not swim, brougt [sic] Higel to the scene by automobile. — Norfolk Pilot.

Gentlemen:

This clipping cut from the Norfolk Pilot gives brief account of the death of Leonard martin. We may be able to send you more complete account later. Funeral was held at Harrisonburg, Va., yesterday.

Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Garber are daughters of the Rev. A. D. Wenger, principal of the Eastern Mennonite Academy of Harrisonburg, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were married about ten months ago and Mr. and Mrs. Garber were married recently after the close of Commencement Exercises and left immediately on their honeymoon for Florida. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. martin who not having taken a trip after their wedding considered this a belated honeymoon trip. — Deceased is well and favorably known in the Old Mennonite circles in Maryland and Virginia. Due to some error in addressing the telegrams, relatives received the first news of the sad accident thru the daily papers.

Harrisonburg, Va., June 14. — Word was received here last night by Elmer martin, of near Eastern Mennonite School, that his son, Leonard martin, was drowned Thursday afternoon at Sarasota Beach, Fla., in attempting to rescue his sister-in-law, Mrs. John Garber, wife of John F. Garber, who went out too far in the breakers at the beach and was in danger of losing her life. Mrs. Garber was afterwards saved by others on the scene.

Mr. and Mrs. Garber were married last Thursday, June 5, at the home of her father, A. D. Wenger,president of Eastern Mennonite School, and accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Martin, were on their wedding trip. They had been to Key West and were returning up the coast of Florida with the intention of returning to their homes here in about ten days.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin had been married about eight months. Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Garber are sisters. Mr. Garber, who is manager of the Garber Hatchery near Harrisonburg, is the son of Bishop David Garber, of Eastern Mennonite School.

Mr. Martin's body will arrive here tonight at 9:30. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from Weaver's Mennonite church. As yet no definite arrangements have been made.
