Lancaster Conf. Bishop Dies Unexpectedly

Smoketown, Pa. — John S. Martin, 55, well-known Lancaster Conference bishop, died unexpectedly Jan. 18 at his home on Route 1, New Holland.

About 900 persons attended the viewing on Monday evening at the Weaver Funeral Home, New Holland. Funeral services were held at the Groffdale Mennonite Church, which was filled to capacity with friends and relatives. Bishops in the conference served as pall bearers.

Bishop Martin was ordained to the ministry for the Groffdale Church on Jan. 19, 1949, and on Feb. 1, 1962 be was ordained bishop for the Groffdale District. He was active in mission and evangelistic work throughout the district, and was a member of the board of Philhaven Mental Hospital. He was also a farmer, and was a representative of the Eastern States Cooperative Exchange.

Survivors include his wife, the former Elmeda Bowman, a daughter Henrietta, Mrs. John Shertzer of Leola, and his father, Milton H. Martin.
