Well-Known Lancaster Conference Bishop Passed Away at 87

NOAH H. MACK PIONEERED IN HOME MISSION AND EVANGELISTIC EFFORTS

New Holland, Pa. — An estimated 750 persons were present at the Groffdale meeting house on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 4, for funeral services of Noah H. Mack. 87, venerable bishop and pioneer home mission worker and evangelist of the Lancaster Conference.

Bishop Mack passed away on Oct. 31 at the Good Samaritan Home on Welsh Mountain, an invalid home where he had lived for many years. The Home and a mission to the colored people living in the area had claimed his interest and support for over 50 years. He was appointed superintendent of the project in 1899.

For a number of years previous to that he was a teacher in West Earl township. He was ordained as a minister in the Groffdale-Metzler district in 1900, and in 1905 conducted the first Mennonite revival meetings in Lancaster County. His ordination to the office of bishop took place in 1919.

Bishop Mack had remained active in mission and evangelistic work even in later years, and only last year had conducted special meetings in several western states.

His wife and two adopted daughters preceded him in death. A number of nephews and nieces are the only survivors.
