JOHN P. LOWENBERG

John P. Lowenberg, son of John and Katherine Lowenberg, was born on a farm near Donnellson in Franklin township, Lee county, Iowa, on March 8, 1868. He passed away at his home in Donnellson on Friday evening, August 11, 1950, at the age of 82 years, five months and three days.

His health and eye-sight had been failing for several years, but he bore his affliction quietly and patiently, following the admonition of our Master, “Be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.”

On September 25, 1881, he was baptized by Rev. Christian Schowalter and received into the fellowship of the Zion Mennonite church of which be remained a faithful member until his death.

On January 20, 1895, he was united in marriage with Anne Christine Weber at the home of the bride by Rev. Schowalter. They were permitted to share life’s joys and sorrows together for more than 54 years. This union was blessed with five daughters, Lillian, Minnie, Elma, Verda, Mildred, and one son, Roy J. Lowenberg.

After their marriage, they started housekeeping on a farm near West Point, Iowa, but the next year they moved on a farm near New Boston, Iowa, where they lived until 1943, when they moved to Donnellson.

He leaves to mourn his departure five daughters: Mrs. Earl P. Trump of Donnellson, Mrs. Clifford White of New Boston, Mrs. John Loges of Primrose, Mildred of Keokuk, and Minnie at home; one son, Roy J. of Donnellson; three sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law; three grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He is also survived by five brothers: Rudolph T. of Donnellson, Jacob H. of Atalissa, Iowa, August B. and Alfred of Donnellson, and Robert J. of St. Paul, Minnesota. Also, many nephews and nieces besides many other relatives and friends mourn his passing.

His wife preceded him into the Great Beyond on March 6, 1949. He was also preceded in death by two grandchildren and three brothers, Peter, Edward J., and Henry; and three sisters, Mrs. John Schnebele, Mrs. Dan Bentzinger, and Barbara Lowenberg.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Zion Mennonite church with the pastor officiating. A mixed quartet composed of Dorothy Krebill, Virginia Lowenberg, Vernon Lowenberg, and Rudolph Krehbiel sang the hymns, "Face to Face” and "Near to the Heart of God."

Willard Lowenberg, Harry Krebill, H. Fred Krebill, Calvin Lowenberg, Carmi Lowenberg, and Rudolph Krehbiel, Jr. served as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Mennonite cemetery northwest of town.
