Meade Resident Dies

Meade, Kan. — Funeral services for Jacob E. Loewen, 86, widely known resident of this community, were held Jan. 15 at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, with Rev. Johnny Reimer and Rev. J. W. Fast officiating.

Mr. Loewen died Jan. 12 at Meade District Hospital. A resident of this community since 1907, he was a retired farmer, machinist and nurseryman. He and his brother were believed to be among the first wheat growers in the nation to own a combine.

JACOB LOEWEN

Jacob E. Loewen was born to Henry and Maggie Loewen on Nov. 14, 1888, at Jansen, Neb. in August 1907 he moved to Meade, Kan. with his parents.

He received Christ as Savior and was baptized and received into the Mennonite Church on May 31, 1909, by Abram L. Friesen.

He was married to Lena Friesen on Sept. 30, 1915, at Meade. They were privileged to live together for 59 years. To this union were born two sons and two daughters.

He took up farming near Meade. He especially enjoyed working with trees, and for some time operated a nursery. He also enjoyed working with machines.

In the earlier years he led singing in the church. Father spent much time reading and he especially enjoyed reading the Bible. His sight began to fail, but as often as possible he would continue to come to Sunday school.

His health had been failing recently. He was taken to the Meade Hospital on Saturday evening Jan. 11. Death came unexpectedly three house later, early Sunday, Jan. 12, 1975. He reached the age of 86.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, of Meade; two sons, Henry and wife Lena and John and wife Elizabeth, both of Meade; two daughters, Elizabeth and husband Will Classen of Walnut Hill, Fla. and Bertha and husband George Classen of Sturgis, Mich.; 20 grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Abe E. Loewen and Isaac W. Loewen, both of Meade; and one sister, Mrs. John Isaac of Dinuba, Calif. — The Family.
