Our mother, Elizabeth (Vogt) Loewen, was born on May 7, 1882 in South Russia where she received her schooling.

After accepting the Lord as her Savior at the age of 20, she received catechism instruction and was baptized in July 1901 by Elder Jacob Penner.

She was married to Jacob Loewen on Feb. 2,1902. In December 1925 the family emigrated to Mexico, where father died after a short illness on Oct. 22, 1926, after only 24 years of marriage. One son, Jacob, was drowned within a year at the age of 22.

After living in Mexico for three years the family was able to enter the United States. They lived near Chinook, Mont. for three years. In 1931 they moved to Washington where they resided at Deer Park and Spokane until 1945, when they moved to Lynden.

Eleven children were born to this union, six of whom preceded her in death.

Mother experienced many hardships. The last 14 years she was a diabetic. She was a praying mother, much concerned about the spiritual welfare of her children. She made her home at the Lynden Rest Home for the last five and a half years. She suffered a severe heart attack on Sept. 25. After making a good recovery, she was moved back to her own room on Oct. 13. Early Sunday morning, Oct. 14, she had another heart attack and slipped away to be with her Lord and Master, reaching the age of 80 years, five months and seven days. She lived as a widow for 36 years.
