Pioneer Immigrant To Manitoba Dies

Steinbach, Man. — David Letkeman, Sr., one of the few remaining survivors of the original Mennonite immigrant group to come to the Red River Valley from Russia in 1874 died at Bethesda Hospital here Feb. 1.

Mr. Letkeman celebrated his 95th birthday at a family gathering here on Jan. 11. The following day he suffered a stroke, from which did not recover.

Born in the Ukraine, South Russia, in 1870, he came to Manitoba with his parents in 1874. The family settled in Chortitz, south of Winkler. He was a member of the Chortitzer Church here, where the funeral was conducted Feb. 6.

The large family of survivors includes his second wife, five of his eight children, 39 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.
