Mother and Daughter Fatally Burned

ATTEMPTED RESCUE FAILS IN HOUSE FIRE AT MIDLAND, MICH.

Midland, Mich. — One of the largest funerals held at the Mennonite church here in recent years occurred on Monday, Feb. 26, when final services took place for Mrs. Wilbur Leidig, 25, and her daughter Violet.

The mother and daughter were fatally burned the night of Feb. 22 when fire destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Kindy, parents of Mrs. Leidig. The mother and three daughters, sleeping in an upstairs bedroom, suddenly found the room on fire. Mrs. Leidig helped the two youngest ones to safety and then returned to get Violet, but both were badly burned and passed away the following day at the Midland hospital.

The family had been staying at the Kindy home temporarily while their own house was being remodeled. The fire is believed to have started in the attic.

The services here were widely attended, many of those attending being unable to get inside the building. Friends and relatives came from other Michigan communities and also from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Survivors include the husband and father, four other children, Mr. and Mrs. Kindy, and five brothers and three sisters of Mrs. Leidig.
