MOSES E. LEHMAN

Moses Edmund Lehman, son of Peter P. and Katherine Lehman, peacefully departed this life on March 1, 1951, at the home of his son, Elvin R. Lehman, at California, Mo., at the ripe age of 96 years, eight months and 15 days. Death followed a cerebral hemorrhage two weeks earlier.

He was the last survivor of a family of eleven. His brothers were John, Chris, Peter P., Daniel, Simeon and William T.; the sisters, Barbara Aeschbacher, Elizabeth Welty, Kate Lyon and Mollie Gerber.

He was born at Sonnenberg, Wayne county, Ohio, on June 24, 1854. In 1866 at the age of about 12 years, he came with his parents, who were one of the pioneer families, making settlement in the community surrounding Bethel Mennonite church, to make his home.

On February 5, 1885, he was united in marriage to Caroline Emily Loganbill, at which time they established the home where he spent the rest of his life. His wife preceded him in death February 9, 1901.

Left to mourn his passing are the following: Elma C. of the home, Elvin R. of California, Mo., Della E. Jeffries of Odessa and Ada C. of Zuni, N. M. An infant son and two daughters, Hilda Rose and Lydia Sarah, preceded him in death. He also leaves three grandchildren, Donald Jeffries of Rock Port, Porter Jeffries of Odessa, and Mary Carolyn Lehman of California, Mo.; and one great grandson, Dennis Russel Jeffries. Also a host of other relatives and friends mourn his passing.

In his youthful years he made his confession to his Lord and Master and became an active member of the Bethel Mennonite church and lived a long life of Christian service.

He was quite active in the affairs of his community, and gave his time and talents to the promotion of school and many community activities in which he was associated. His counsel was often sought by his friends and neighbors, especially the younger generation. He was elected to serve one term as judge of the county court and served as treasurer of the Hazel Dell Farmers Insurance Co. for many years. He attended Wadsworth college at Wadsworth, Ohio, when he was 18.

He was, by nature, quite [sic] and unassuming. He loved beautiful things, among them flowers, and always said, “Give me flowers while I am living.”

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Bethel church, Rev. Albrecht officiating. Pallbearers were his nephews, Austin Lehman, Dave Lehman, Warren Lehman, Tillman Lehman, Herman Aeschbacher and Ed Garber.

Flowers were carried by nieces, Mrs. Ruthie Aeschbacher, Mrs. Edna Featherstone, Blanche Aeschbacher, Alma Lehman, Mrs. Elmer Garber, Lavera Lehman, Lena Garber and a friend, Maude Schaffter.

Music was by the Bethel choir with Mrs. Emma Garber at the piano.
