Amish Youth Killed, Two Others Injured By Rock Throwers

Goshen, Ind. — An Amish young man was fatally injured and a young Amish couple sustained head injuries Saturday night, March 22, when rocks were hurled into heir buggies from a speeding car in two separate incidents in Lagrange County.

Mervin B. Lehman, 17, suffered massive injuries to the left lung and chest and was dead on arrival at Lagrange County Hospital. Riding in the buggy with him when a rock was hurled from a passing car was his nephew, 16-year-old Ernest Lehman. The latter was unhurt.

About 10 minutes earlier a chunk of paving asphalt was thrown from a car into a buggy occupied by Glen O. Troyer, 21, of rural Topeka, Emma M. Miller, 21, and Vera Miller. The Troyer youth and Emma Miller both suffered head injuries. Miss Miller had a gash which required 17 stitches.

The incidents took place in the Amish settlement southwest of Lagrange. County officials are conducting a search for the rock throwers.

Mervin Lehman leaves his parents, Dan J. and Fanny Lehman, seven brothers and five sisters.
