JACOB M. LANDIS

Jacob M. Landis, son of the late Henry S. and Magdalena (Moyer) Landis, was born December 19, 1864 in Richland township, Bucks County, Pa., on the Landis homestead east of Richlandtown.

On October 28, 1880, he was baptized and received into membership of the Springfield Mennonite church, Pleasant Valley, Pa. where he remained a life-long member. Bro. Landis was a sincere Christian, faithful to the Lord, and took a vital interest in the work of the Lord and the church. He served as deacon of the congregation for 40 years and at the time of his death was deacon emeritus. He was the oldest member of the Springfield congregation.

He was active in the Eastern District Conference, having served on the board of directors of the Mennonite Home for the Aged at Frederick, Pa., and also in various other committees of the conference.

He was interested in community affairs, having been a charter member of Richland Grange. He was engaged in farming and conducted a commission business in Philadelphia before his retirement.

On February 21, 1891, he was united in marriage with Mary Etta Fretz by the Rev. Allen M. Fretz, brother of Mrs. Landes. Together they shared 62 years of blessing, joy and sorrows. This union was blessed with a son and a daughter.

In 1907, Mr. and Mrs. Landis moved from the homestead to their present home on the Richlandtown Pike. Death came suddenly and peacefully in the morning hours of Wednesday, March 25, 1953, bringing his earthly life to 88 years, 3 months and 6 days. "He is resting from his labours, being absent from the body but present with the Lord.”

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife Mary Etta (nee Fretz) Landis, one daughter, Carrie F., wife of Harry E. Hinkle of Quakertown; one son, Harry F., residing on the homestead Richland township; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
