Date of Birth: 1915 August 2, Burwalde, Chortiza, South Russia
Date of Death: 2016 November 27, Winnipeg, Manitoba (per dignitymemoria.com)

Elsie Krueger passed away peacefully at Bethania Personal Care Home. She leaves to mourn her daughter Melanie Klassen and husband Edwin; grandsons, Philip (Marlene) and Andrew (Alexa); also three great-grandchildren, Neve, Riley, and Ellen Klassen. She was born in 1915 in a German Mennonite town in Ukraine, but when the Stalinist era started, most of the men in her family were arrested, tortured, and never heard from again. Elsie, several sisters and her aging mother were able to flee to Germany. When the Second World War ended, the country lay in ruins and jobs were scarce. Fortunately, the Canadian government allowed immigrants who were "sponsored", and thanks to the Abraham Krahn family, our little group arrived in Winnipeg. Elsie had studied two years of mechanical engineering, and after mastering the English language, she worked as a draftsman for Moody and Moore Architects, and later for Wardrop until her retirement. During her early years her artistic abilities became evident, and in Canada her paintings were once sold at Eaton's and The Bay. Upon her retirement, she joined the Forum Art Institute, the Manitoba Sketch Club, and the St. James Sketch Club, and she greatly enjoyed the friendship and activities these provided. Elsie enjoyed exceptionally good health until the final two years, when her strength began to fade. She is now at rest. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery, No. 1 Highway East and Navin Road.
