Widow of Theologian Dies in Germany

Newton, Kan. — Relatives here received a cablegram April 8 notifying them of the death of Mrs. Anna Kroeker of Murnau, Germany. She was the widow of Dr. Jakob J. Kroeker, theologian and well-known minister of the Mennonite Brethren church. She was 89.

She is survived by the following children: John Kroeker of Saunderstown, R. I., Maria Kroeker of Murnau, Germany, Henry Kroeker of Lund, Sweden, Nick Kroeker of Chicago, Ill., Jacob Kroeker of Murnau, Germany, Dr. Ernst Kroeker of Dortmund, Germany, Dr. Peter Kroeker of Essen, Germany, Imanuel [sic Immanual] Kroeker of Munich, Germany, and Mrs. John (Anna) Bartel of Rosedale, B. C. One brother, John Langemann, lives in Winnipeg, Man. Surviving are also 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were scheduled April 10 at Muehlhausen, Stuttgart, Germany.

Mrs. Walter Thiesen of Newton and Jacob J. Kroeker of Wichita, formerly of Newton, are among the grandchildren.

Dr. Kroeker, who died near Stuttgart in 1948, was a leading Mennonite theologian and writer of Russia and later of Germany. Before World War I he worked extensively with Bible conferences in Russia and later in missionary and relief services. After moving to Germany he devoted himself to theological study, particularly in the Old Testament, and published numerous volumes of biblical commentary and devotional works.
