SOPHIA ESTHER KREHBIEL

Mrs. Sophia Esther Krehbiel (nee Ewert) was born on Nov. 7, 1889, at Newton, Kan. to Frank and Agnes Ewert and spent her girlhood days near Newton, where she also attended Bethel College. She was baptized at the Grace Hill church on June 12, 1905.

In 1909 she moved to Canada with her parents, and they settled near Lockwood, Sask. From here she went to collegiate and normal school in Saskatoon and then taught school at Langham.

On June 7, 1917, she was married to Gustav A. Krehbiel and in 1919 they both became members of the North Star Mennonite Church. She was active in church and Ladies Aid work. For a number of years she was Canadian adviser of the Women's Missionary Association and then influenced the organizing of the Canadian Women's Missionary Conference, of which she was chairman for many years.

She and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last summer, on June 11.

Her health began to fail, so that in the fall she had a brief stay in the Nokomis Hospital. Later she had minor surgery in Saskatoon City Hospital, after which she never regained her strength. She was moved to Nokomis Hospital, and finally home on Dec. 15. On Jan. 10 she was moved to Lanigan Hospital, where on Jan. 11 the Lord called her home to glory, at the age of 78 years, two months and four days.

She was preceded in death by her first-born infant, a daughter. She leaves to mourn, her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Lucille Welker, and one son Merl, both of Drake; seven grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Drake Mennonite Church on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 14, with Rev. H. Penner officiating, assisted by Rev. J. J. Thiessen of Saskatoon. Interment was made in the family plot of the Drake Mennonite Cemetery.
