FRANK F. KLIEWER

Frank F. Kliewer, who would have been 86 years old in March, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1959, at the Dallas, Ore. Rest Home where he had been a patient about two weeks. He was born in Russia March 3, 1873, son of Franz and Maria Unrau Kliewer.

The family migrated to Canada in 1878, settling in Alberta and ten years later came to Dallas. He returned to Alberta in 1902 where he married Katherine Becker on Sept. 21, 1905. They came back to the United States in 1906, Idaho till 1923 when they again moved to Dallas.

They lived on a small farm on Miller avenue east of the city limits and operated a retail dairy for a number of years. Some residents recall that the morning after the Jan. 31 deep snowfall of 1937, Mr. Kliewer's milk delivery truck was the first vehicle to appear on downtown streets. He hitched a team of horses to the truck and went about his milk deliveries in snow that was 32 inches deep on the level.

For a number of years the family anglicized the family name to Kliever and most of the children retained this spelling, but the father restored the 'w' some time ago. He was a long-time member of Grace Mennonite Church. Mrs. Kliewer died here April 15, 1929, and a daughter, Mrs. Lena E. Buhler died in January, 1935.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Marie Neuman, Aberdeen, Idaho, Mrs. Gertrude Duty, Milwaukie, and Miss Helen Kliewer, Colton; and four sons, Paul L. Kliever, Salem, Frank L. Kliever, Coos Bay, Henry G. and John L. Kliever, Dallas. A brother, Pete A. Kliewer, lives at Corvallis. There are nine grandchildren.

Services were held Monday, Jan.12, at Grace Mennonite church with Dr. H. D. Burkholder officiating. Burial was made in Dallas cemetery.
