NEWTON & VICINITY

Herman D. Klaassen, 80, formerly of Walton, died Jan. 10 at Salem Hospital, Hillsboro. Funeral services were held Jan. 13 at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton. J. Floyd Zuercher and Dennis Fast officiated. Burial was in Walton Cemetery. A native of Hillsboro, he was a retired farmer and machinist, and a member of Walton Mennonite Church. Survivors include one son, Dayle of Pittsburg; three daughters, Darlene Schmidt of Hillsboro, Ima Oliver of Inman and Joyce Graber of St. Louis; two sisters, Susie Winter of Hillsboro and Eva Brandt of Wichita; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife, Kathryn B. Hildebrand, died in 1985. Five brothers and seven sisters also preceded him in death.
