PETER J. KAUFMAN

Peter J. Kaufman, son of Jacob and Barbara Kaufman, was born in Volhynia, Russia, on Feb. 24, 1871, and brought his earthly life to a close on March 20, 1948, attaining the age of 77 years and 26 days.

His parents brought him to the States in 1874 and settled in South Dakota. To the trials of early pioneer life was added that of the passing of his father. In 1884 his mother with others moved to Kansas, where he spent the rest of his life.

He was baptized upon the confssion [sic] of his faith in the Lord Jesus on Nov. 21, 1886, by Rev. Stucky and became a member of the Hopefield Mennonite church. Later, with the organization of the Eden church, he transferred his membership and remained a faithful member until his departure.

On April 25, 1893, he was united in marriage with Anna Stucky. This union was blessed with one child, which passed away and was followed soon by the mother.

On August 23, 1895, he was united in wedlock with Anna Goering, with whom he shared life for 52 years, 7 months and 27 days. Eight children were born to this union, 6 daughters and 2 sons; 3 preceded him in death. With his family he lived on the farm near Moundridge until 1934, when he retired and moved to town. He was a loving father, deeply interested in the spiritual welfare of his loved ones and the church.

He became ill on Saturday, March 13, with abdominal hemorrhages and was taken to the Bethel Hospital where medical aid was sought. In spite of all human efforts to restore his health, he quietly passed on to be with the Lord on March 20.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife; five children, Anna (Mrs. Jonas H. Vogt), Lydia (Mrs. Joe B. Schrag), Emma of the home. Wilma (Mrs. Abe R. Regier Jr.) and Willard, all of Moundridge; 3 sons-in-law, 1 daughter-in-law, 15 grandchildren, 4 having preceded him in death; 2 great-grandchildren, 1 brother-in-law, 3 sisters-in-law, 1 half brother and a host of relatives and friends.
