PETE E. KAUFMAN

Pete E. Kaufman, son of Jacob P. and Anna Goering-Kaufman, was born Aug 11, 1896, near Moundridge, Kan. In his late teens, he moved with his family to a farm near McPherson, Kan.

He attended school through the fifth grade and then stayed home to help on the farm. In later years, he attended Hutchinson Business School.

He was baptized upon his confession of faith in 1912 by N. R. Kaufman and joined Hopefield Mennonite Church, where he remained a member until his death.

On Nov. 30, 1922, he married Anna Graber of Pretty Prairie. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November 1987.

In 1950 they moved to Kingman, where he was a partner in Flickner-Kaufman Massey Harris Implement for about 15 years. They moved back to McPherson in 1967 and in October 1987 moved to Cedars Retirement Center.

He endured poor health nearly all his life. Two strokes in the last nine years of his life impaired his speech, but he was able to continue his business until a few months before his death. He died of cancer March 1, 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; a daughter and her husband, Marlys and Ted Voran of McPherson; a daughter-in-law, Arlene (Mrs. Alvin) Huxman of Topeka; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Elda and Dave C. Goering of McPherson; and two brothers and their wives, Alfred and Elsie Kaufman and Elmer and Virginia Kaufman, all of McPherson; three sisters-in-law, Alice Kaufman of McPherson, Edna Kaufman of Hesston, and Ella (Mrs. J. J.) Krehbiel of Moundridge; and a brother-in-law, Walter Goering of Moundridge.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Victor and Kenneth; four brothers, Jake, Phil Bert, Edd and Benjamin; and three sisters, Martha, Ann and Evelyn.
