MRS. BERTHA KAUFMAN

Mrs. Bertha Kaufman, 85, died at the Freeman, S. D. hospital on Feb. 14, 1974.

A daughter of Frederick and Catherine Sprunger, she was born near Berne, Ind. on April 3, 1888. She attended public school near her home. She also received some teacher's training and missionary courses sponsored by her church.

She was baptized and joined the First Mennonite Church of Berne on May 24,1903, with Rev. Joel Lehman officiating. She taught Sunday school classes for nearly 35 years.

She was married to Rev. John C. Kaufman Jan. 22, 1933, and transferred her membership to the Salem Mennonite Church, Freeman. They shared joys and sorrows for 23 years. She also shared his ministry in various churches.

She leaves five step-sons, Harry, Edgar, Wesley, Crist and Menno and their wives of the Freeman community; one step-daughter, Mrs. Florence Claassen and husband Orlando of Whitewater, Kan.; one sister and one sister-in-law in Indiana.

Preceding her in death were her husband, three brothers, six sisters, seven brothers-in-law, seven sisters-in-law, one step-son and two step-daughters-in-law.
