Bride of Eight Months Killed in Auto Crash

FOUR OTHERS INJURED IN LANCASTER COUNTY HEAD-ON COLLISION

Lancaster, Pa. — The head-on collision of two autos Friday evening, June 5, claimed the life of Leah (Lapp), Kauffman, 20, of Bird-in-Hand, a bride of eight months.

Also injured and taken to the hospital were her husband, Titus Kauffman, and two neighbor children, Kathryn Louise Zook, 8, and Hilda Joy Zook, 5, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. James Zook, as well as the driver of the other car, James G. Ayala, 16, of Ronks. The older Zook girl was reported in serious condition with head injuries.

It was reported that he Ayala youth applied the brakes as he approached an Amish buggy, his car skidding on the wet pavement and crashing into the Kauffman car. The Kauffmans and the Zook girls were en route to the Intercourse Community Bible School.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kauffman, the daughter of Daniel S. and Lydia (Smoker) Lapp of Kinzer, were held June 10 at the Weavertown Connservative [sic Conservative] Amish Church near Monterey.
