Conference Leader, Former Editor, Called Away Through Death

DEATH COMES UNEXPECTEDLY TO BISHOP DANIEL KAUFFMAN IN IOWA

Daniel Kauffman, bishop in the Mennonite church and for many years editor of the Gospel Herald at Scottdale, Pa., died unexpectedly last week at his home in Iowa.

Because of advancing age, Bishop Kauffman announced his intention to retire from active duty but continued in the editorship until January 1, 1944, when the work was taken over by the new editor, Prof. Paul Erb of Goshen, Ind. He had planned to spend his remaining years in retirement at his home in Iowa.

Bishop Kauffman was born June 20, 1865, at Richfield, Pa., and passed away at the age of 78 years. Coming to Missouri in the early 1880s, he served there for a time as public school teacher and school commissioner of Morgan county. Later he entered the ministry and because of outstanding abilities and faithfulness is [sic] his office attained to a leading position in his conference. he became editor of the Gospel Witness in1905, and later of the Gospel Herald, which position he held until the close of the past year.

He was the author of more than a dozen books and treatises on Mennonite history and doctrine.

Funeral services were held in Iowa and at Scottdale, Pa., where interment took place.
