William Kater

William Kater died at his home one mile east of McLain Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 after a lingering illness but has been confined to his bed only a few days. He is a very well known farmer of that community and has been held in esteem by his neighbors. He is a member of the Immanuel Evangelical church. His funeral services will be conducted at the family home near McLain Friday afternoon at one o'clock and at the Immanuel Evangelical church at two o'clock, by the pastor, Rev. W. J. Cramm.

A daughter Anna died at Bethel hospital on October 18 and others in the family who survive him are his wife, sons August of Hoff, Oregon, Frank Will, Gustav, John, Herman and daughters Mary, Helene, Pauline and Edna in the family circle at home.

Obituary—William Kater

William Kater Sr., was born in Baumgart, Westprenzen [sic], Germany, October 17, 1863. In 1885 he moved into the Rhine province and on Dec. 24, 1886, he was joined in wedlock to Mrs. Wilhelmine Frierabend [sic]. Their marriage was blessed with eleven children, August in Oregon, Anna, who had preceded him in death, Oct. 18, 1920, Frank, William, Mary Helen, Pauline, Gustav, John, Herman and Edna at home. A brother Frank Kater who resides on a farm near Newton, and one brother in Germany also survive.

In April, 1902 he came to America with his family and settled on a farm east of Newton, later they lived on a farm north of Newton, and five years ago they moved to a farm east of McLain. He was a faithful member of the Immanuel Evangelical church. He became afflicted with throat trouble about a year and a half ago, which grew worse, and caused his death. He passed away peacefully, January 24, at 5:30 in the afternoon, on the anniversary of the birthday of his son, William Jr.

The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. J. Cramm. The many beautiful floral designs showed in what esteem he had been held in the community. The church was filled with the many friends of the family.
