• Funeral services were held at the Hillsboro, Kan. Mennonite Brethren Church on July 15 for John P. Kasper, 87, who farmed most of his life in the Lehigh and Canton communities. Survivors include his widow, the former Eva Block; a daughter Linda, on furlough from the mission field in Nigeria; and three sons.

JOHN P. KASPER

John P. Kasper was born at Tipton, Mo. of immigrant parents (from Poland), Peter and Marie Kasper, on Nov. 7, 1876. Because of the death of his mother when he was four and one-half years old, he was taken into the home of the Peter Heinrichs family on a farm near Canton, Kan.

On May 31, 1900 he married Lena Schroeder, daughter of David P. and Sarah Schroeder, to which marriage six children were born. His wife died in 1937 after37 years of marriage. On June 1, 1939 he married Eva Block, daughter of John and Wilhelmina Block of Hillsboro, Kan., with whom he celebrated the silver wedding anniversary just six weeks ago. He died in the Salem Hospital, Hillsboro, on July 11.

He spent most of his life farming near Lehigh. At an early age he received Jesus Christ as Savior. Upon his confession of faith in Christ he was baptized and received into the membership of the Springfield Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Church on March 24, 1895. He was an active member and participated in the work of the Lord. The songs of the Christian faith were particularly delightful to him. For many years he sang in the church choir.

After his second marriage he moved to Hillsboro where, in 1942, he became a member of the Hillsboro, Mennonite Brethren Church. He remained a faithful member here to the time of his departure.

We remember him as a father who was warmly devoted to Jesus Christ. He had a persistent concern for the spiritual welfare of his children and grandchildren. In and around the home he was particular about how things were done. He lived gratefully and appreciated that which others often considered insignificant.

Those who remain include his wife, Mrs. Eva Block Kasper of Hillsboro; four children, David H. Kasper and wife of Hutchinson, Peter H. Kasper and wife of Henderson, Neb., Alvin H. Kasper and wife of Lehigh, and Linda Kasper, a missionary in Nigeria. Two daughters preceded him in death, one in infancy and Susan Kasper in 1956. There are eight grandchildren. Six brothers and sisters remain: Jake Kaiser of Hillsboro, Anna Fernke of California, Katherine Kessler of Hillsboro, Mary Conyers of Wyoming, and Helen Slaight of Salina.
