text of obituary:

URIAH D. JOHNSTON

Uriah David Johnston, son of Lafayette and Anna Detwiler Johnston, was born Feb. 5, 1898. He went to his eternal reward Dec. 9, 1954, aged 56 years, 10 months, and four days.

His failing health the past 18 months was due to a cancer of the stomach. All that modern science could do and loving bonds could offer could not alter the fact that the time of his departure was at hand.

On Dec. 7, 1921, he was married to Forence [sic Florence] Zimmerman of Inman, Kansas. God blessed this union with four sons and six daughters: Ardith of Nappanee, Ind., Alvin of Moundridge, Kansas, Orvis of Leonard, Mo., Luetta of Kalona, Iowa, Esther (Mrs. Donald Zehr) of Rosenburg [sic Roseburg], Ore., Dorothy of Nappanee, Ind., Anna, Dean, Ronine [sic Ronnie] and Donna of the home.

He is survived by his wife, 10 children, three grandchildren, his aged mother, two brothers, Noah of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and John of Hesston, Kansas, three sisters, Lydia (Mrs. Fred Littleton), Alma (Mrs. R. D. Harder), both of Leonard, Mo. and Orpha (Mrs. Lawrence Yoder) of McPherson, Kans., and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Eran, and one sister Salome.

He was born in Shelby County, Missouri and lived on a farm near Leonard all his life. He united with the Mt. Pisgah Mennonite church in his youth and remained a faithful and active member until his death.

He was deeply devoted to his family, a kind and loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed in the home, in the church and in the community.

We sorrow not as those who have no hope, but we are looking forward to a glorious meeting again.
