Accident Brings Deep Sorrow to Whole Community

FUNERAL OF BETTY JOHNSON HELD AT HALSTEAD LAST SUNDAY

An unusually large funeral was held last Sunday afternoon at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite west of Halstead for 12 year old Betty Jane Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Johnson. The girl died Thursday morning in the Halstead hospital from gunshot wounds which she received in school northwest of Halstead on Monday, October 17.

According to a report in the Halstead Independent, "Monday afternoon Clarence Lohmeyer while hunting decided to visit the school. He unloaded his shot gun, hid it outside the school building, and placed the shells in his pocket. At recess he placed one shell in the gun preparatory to resume hunting and stopped at the pump for a drink of water. He said the safety was on the gun.

"William Huffman, son of Charles Huffman, picked up the gun to inspect it, and accidently discharged the gun, the bullets striking Betty Jane who stood nearby."

Miss martha Wedel, daughter of Mrs. Andrew Wedel living northwest of Moundridge, is the teacher of the school, this being her third term there.
