MRS. G. W. JANZEN

Mary Unruh Janzen was born at Waldheim, South Russia, on August 11, 1868, the daughter of Heinrich D. Unruh and Katharina Unruh, nee Voth. She died of cancer on May 14, 1955, at 9:30 p.m. after a three week stay at Mercy hospital, Moundridge, Kansas, at the age of 86 years, nine months, and three days.

Surviving her are three sons, Henry G. of Sylvia, Kansas, Curt of Buhler, and Herbert W. of Hutchinson; one daughter, Agnes (Mrs. A. C. Thiessen) of Inman; one brother, C. C. Unruh of Fairview, Okla.; one sister, Mrs. Anna Hiebert of Coaldale, Alberta; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were a daughter, Mary, three sons, George, William, and Gerhard; two brothers; two sisters, two grandchildren, and her husband, George W. Janzen, who passed away on August 24, 1947.

Mrs. Janzen came from Russia to the United States with her father and brothers and sisters when she was 16 years of age, her mother having passed away when she was but six. They arrived in Hillsboro, Kansas on Oct. 30, 1884, and soon settled on a farm about ten miles south of McPherson. She was married to George W. Janzen on Oct. 6, 1891, and they enjoyed almost 56 years of married life together.

After living on the farm south of McPherson a few years, the couple moved to Buhler where Mr. Janzen went into business — first having a store and later, a livery stable. In 1901 they moved to a farm west of Buhler where they stayed for 25 years, after which they retired from the farm and moved back to Buhler.

She was baptized on Feb. 12, 1922, by Rev. P. R. Voth and was received into the membership of the Buhler Mennonite church where she remained a member until her death. After her husband passed away in 1947, Mrs. Janzen went to live with her various children for two years, after which she became a resident of the Inman Home for the Aged where she stayed until her last illness took her to the hospital in Moundridge.
