Henderson, Nebraska Pioneer Observes 90th Birthday in Oklahoma

MRS. JANZEN ONE OF TWO ORIGINAL SETTLERS STILL LIVING

Bartlesville, Okla. — On Sunday, Feb. 28, Mrs. Maria Janzen of Munich, N. Dakota celebrated her 90th birthday in Bartlesville, where she is spending the winter months in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Franz (Minnie).

Born in Landskron, South Russia in 1870 as Maria Abrahams, she migrated to America in 1874 with her mother, two brothers and five sisters. This family was part of the original Mennonite settlers who founded the York county, Nebraska settlement at Henderson. Of this original group of Nebraska settlers there remain now only two, Mrs. Janzen and J. J. Friesen of Henderson.

She was married to Henry H. Janzen at Henderson in 1898 and moved to Bingham Lake, Minn. in 1895. The family moved to Munich, North Dakota in 1903 which had been her home ever since.

In addition to her daughter Minnie of Bartlesville, she has three daughtres [sic] in Nebraska, Mrs. D. D. Friesen (Mary) and Mrs. A. P. Ratzlaff (Ann) of Henderson and Mrs. H. D. Friesen (Sarah) of Lushton. Her three sons are John H. Janzen of Warroad, Minn., Henry A. Janzen of Phoeniz, Arizona and William E. Janzen of Hampden, North Dakota.

Mrs. Janzen's many friends and acquaintances will be interested to know that she is in fine health and manages to keep actively engaged in piecing quilts, along with other activities. She plans to return to her North Dakota home for at least part of the coming summer.
