Central Asien. Nikopol [sic], Turkestan, Aulieata, den 1. Feb. 1909…. — Ed.

Central Asia. Nikolaipol, Aulie-Ata, Turkestan, Feb. 1, 1909. Our oldest son Jacob was also baptized last summer. Now we also have five children whom we bring to the Lord in prayer every day. We have been in Mara for more than two months, according to a common expression. In November of last year, our youngest brother Hermann died in the prime of youth. He went blessedly home to his Savior. It was especially difficult for us brothers and sisters because our dear parents had gone to the grave of our dear brother Kornelius in Spat, Crimea, and had not yet returned. Kornelius was married there, had a good living, leaves a widow and three sons from three to seven years. Then my dear wife Marie, née Toews, formerly from Temir Bulat, Crimea, fell ill. She could hardly leave her bed when I had to lie down, suffering from encephalitis, the disease to which brother Kornelius succumbed. I was still bedridden when our youngest son became seriously ill, and the Lord brought him home on December 28th; then Tinchen, four years old, had also been in bed for three days, and she is still in bed with little improvement, but in the last five weeks there have been only a few nights that we were both able to spend in bed at the same time. But we know that the Lord does all these things and wants to purify and cleanse us. "But tribulation, when it comes, seems to us not to be joy, but sorrow." The Lord shares with me until now. He has already taken home one wife and seven children; he has left me one wife and six children. But we are not the only ones to be visited, because Franz Pauls had to give three adult children to the Lord, all of them converted. Eight new burial mounds have been added to our cemetery in a short time…. Greetings to all acquaintances, friends, relatives and siblings, and parents, the latter in Carpenter, S. Dakota. Heinrich and Maria Janzen Note: Thank you warmly, dear brother, please report often from there. - Editor.

text of obituary:

Nikolaipol, Asien, den 25. Januar 1910…. Meine Geschwister und Eltern sind alle hier. Br. An Tinchens Bett viele Nächte gewacht, viel gebetet.

Nikolaipol, Asia, January 25, 1910…. My siblings and parents are all here. Brother Kornelius died in July 1908 in Spat, Crimea, survived by three sons: Jacob, Hermann and Kornelius, are still there with their mama, now the Isaak Fasts. Brother Hermann died in November 1908 at the age of 19 years. Brother Peter, teacher Johannes, Agatha (Jakob Peters), Helene (Heinrich Eck) and we live here in the village; Abram is presently in Berlin, Germany in the Bible School. Siblings Johann Wiebe (Marie) and Franz and the parents live down at Urmaral, where the D. Peters brethren celebrated a wedding in 1882, are building a water mill there. We are going through a crisis materially, have little money; hopefully it will improve soon, because in April this year, the construction of the railroad is supposed to begin; it is to connect Central-Asia, Tashkent-Orenburg with the Siberian. From there (Siberia) it has already begun…. Two of our children surrendered to the Lord, Jakob and Marie, then there are Lene and Fränzchen and from the second marriage Tinchen and Anna. We have a year full of affliction behind us. Tinchen fell ill at Christmas 1908, Sunday after Christmas our youngest, Herman, died after a severe illness; before that we were both bedridden. We watched over Tinchen's bed many nights, prayed a lot. At last there was improvement, and lo and behold, the left leg was twisted. After she went through so much physically, I went with her to the hot springs, about 380 verst east of here, in the mountains. These are hot mineral springs, from 18 to 38 degrees of warmth. It improved, but still lacked much for recovery. From there, not quite three weeks home, we decided that Mama would go with her to the south. They stayed away for two months. Now Tinchen can walk on her own, but not quite straight. I brought them home from the train on October 10. On October 15, the Lord brought us a new affliction. Jacob, our oldest, was riding, the horse fell and he broke his left leg twice below the knee. But, thank God, he is already back at work. Brother-in-law Eck handled it; now he is staying in the Crimea, gathering there more knowledge in homeopathy and electrical medicine, in order to be able to devote himself completely to the profession of a doctor here among us and the Kirghiz…. My brothers Heinrich and Robert Janzen left last week for Halbstadt with pork and probably will bring back a steam boiler for the new Sawodd…. Greetings to the editor and readers from Heinrich and Maria Janzen. Note: We have confirmed yours and K. Goossens’ Rundschau [subscription] until Jan. 11, and please, pay ten rubles to poor widows there and then everything will be fine. Greetings — Editor.
