Helena Warkentine Janzen, daughter of Peter P. and Justina Wiens Warkentine, was born in South Russia. As a small girl she came with her parents to America and they settled in Marion County, Kansas, near Hillsboro, where she also received her elementary schooling.
As a teenage girl she received catechism instruction, was baptized and received into the Mennonite Church near Goessel. In 1917 they moved to Medford, Okla. and she transferred her membership to the Medford Mennonite Church where she remained a faithful member to the end.
On Jan. 14, 1897, she was married to Jacob S. Janzen. To this union were born eight children, of whom one daughter preceded her in death. Surviving children are: Susie, Mrs. P. M. Reimer of Medford, Okla., Justina, Mrs. John Harms of Reedley, Calif., Marie, Mrs. Ben Bergen of Eldorado, Mo., Martha, Mrs. Ben Schmidt of Medford, Bertha, Mrs. Wm. Dirksen of Blackwell, Okla., Lena, Mrs. Bill Janzen of Peck, Kan., and William T. of Enid, Okla. Two step-daughters preceded her in death.
She departed this life on April 5, 1968, in the Bethesda Hospital, Goessel, Kan., at the age of 96 years and eight months. She leaves to mourn her departure six daughters, one son, 22 grandchildren, and 49 great-grandchildren.
Mother left a wonderful testimony. A verse that she quoted five days before she died is as follows: "Since I have labored, I go to rest and with my eyes closed. Father with Thy eyes watch over me in my bed of rest. Have I this day done any wrong, dear Lord through grace and mercy forgive it all. Through Jesus' blood and righteousness, all is well."
