13-Year-Old Kansas Youth Fatally Stricken At Basketball Practice

Harper, Kan. — A 13-year-old Harper youth was fatally stricken on Jan. 7 during a practice session of the Harper Junior High seventh grade basketball team.

Scott Hostetler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Hostetler, had practiced only a few minutes when he went to the bleachers to rest, and then collapsed. His coach applied mouth-to-mouth respiration, while other staff members and students summoned aid. The youth's mother, a registered nurse, was among those who came and helped in efforts to revive him.

Doctors used a respirator and applied Heart massage while the youth was rushed to Harper District Hospital, where further efforts were of no avail.

Funeral services were held Monday forenoon at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite church, with Rev. Robert Zehr in charge.

Surviving in addition to the parents are a brother, Lynn, and sisters, Karen, Arleen and Heidi, all of the home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. U. H. Hostetler of Harper and Mrs. Samuel Lehman of Castorland, N. Y.
