KATIE HORST

Katie Buckwalter Horst was born Nov. 9, 1884 at Intercourse, Pa. to Benjamin and Catherine Buckwalter. She died Feb. 15, 1980 at Landis Homes near Lancaster, Pa., where she had resided since 1970. She was 95.

She was baptized by Isaac Eby in 1897 at Hershey’s Mennonite Church and was true to her commitment of faith throughout her long life. She was a member of the Hampton Mennonite Church in Reading at the time of her death.

She was married to Elmer K. Horst on May 28, 1914. They made their home in Lancaster until moving to the Welsh Mountain Mission. Later they returned to Lancaster and eventually settled near Adamstown. After their family had grown they resided in Reading. Her husband died on Mar. 18, 1967.

She had a constant concern for the spiritual welfare of each member of her family and for the many persons whose friendships she cultivated until her death.

Surviving are her daughter, Orpah (Mrs. Elam) Kurtz of Jefferson, N.C.; and seven sons, Irvin of Heemsteed, The Netherlands, Paul of Escanaba, Mich., Samuel of Harrisonburg, Va., Leon of Quakertown, Pa., Luke and Clarence of Mohnton, Pa., and John of Forty Fort, Pa.; 40 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were two children, Elmer and Katherine, and all of her brothers and sisters, Aaron, Henry, Annie, Amanda and Lydia.
