13-Year-Old Indiana Boy Killed While Crossing Highway

Elkhart, Ind. — A traffic accident the evening of Sept. 8 claimed the life of John R. Horst, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Aden H. Horst of the Dunlap community, located between Goshen and Elkhart.

The boy was attempting to cross US-33 near his home when he was struck by a car and thrown about 20 feet. A couple who witnessed the accident said that the car, driven by a 20-year-old rural Elkhart man, had just left a drive-in and that its headlights had not been turned on.

John was an eighth grader last year at Concord Junior High School where he played in the band. He was a member of the Hudson Lake Mennonite Church. Surviving in addition to the parents are a twin sister, Janet Kay, and three other sisters, Mardene, a student at Hesston College, Ruth and Anita, both of the home; and grandparents, Mrs. Nannie Horst of Maugansville, Md. and Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Troyer of Hutchinson, Kan.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart with Rev. Russell Krabill and Rev. Sam Troyer officiating.
