Rev. D. M. Hofer, K. M. B. Conf. Leader, Called Away in Death

FUNERAL SERVICES AT BRIDGEWATER, S. D. THURSDAY, JANUARY 4

Bridgewater, S. D. — Funeral services were held at the Salem K. M. B. church here Thursday, Jan. 4, for Rev. D. M. Hofer, many years a leader in the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren conference, who died at his home in Chicago, Sunday, Dec. 31. The memorial service at Chicago was held January 2, after which the body was shipped to the P. G. Hofer, Sr., home here.

Rev. Hofer, suffering from a combination of ailments, had been ill for several weeks before his death. He was widely known also outside his own conference through his service as minister, relief worker, author, editor and city missionary.

Superintendent of Mission

The first 33 years of his life Rev. Hofer spent on a farm in this vicinity. He then served as public school teacher for about 10 years. Later he and his wife moved to Bridgewater, where he conducted a successful business until they located in Chicago to direct the work of the Lincoln Avenue Gospel Mission. The mission served also as headquarters for Der Warheitsfreund, official K. M. B. conference publication, of which he was editor from 1917 to 1933. It was in 1917 that he was ordained as pastor and evangelist.

Relief Work in Russia

During the severe famine in Russia, Rev. Hofer heeded the call of the American Mennonite Relief Administration to serve as commissioner among the stricken Russian Mennonites, in which work he was engaged during 1922 and 1923. On the journey home he and his wife made a trip around the world.

For a number of years he was chairman of the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren conference and secretary of its foreign mission board.

He was born July 24, 1869, at Johannesruh, South Russia, and was 75 years of age at the time of his death. His wife and a large circle of close relatives survive.
