■ Katherine Hodel, 89, of Newton, a retired business owner and homemaker. died Oct. 29. She was a member of First Mennonite Church of Newton. Survivors include three daughters, Ellagene Regier and Marilyn Loeffler, both of Newton, and JoAnn Roberts of Phoenix; a brother, Edwin of Hydro, Okla.; a sister, Ella Heidebrecht of Clinton, Okla.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Chris, died in 1990.

KATHERINE HODEL

Katherine Hodel, 89, of Newton, Kan., died Oct. 29, 1995, at Newton Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 3, 1905, in Lucien, Okla., to Guss and Lena (Funk) Ewy. She grew up in Hydro, Okla., moving to Newton, in 1924. She married Chris Hodel Oct. 5, 1930, in Hydro, Okla., and moved to Hillsboro, Kan. They moved back to Newton in 1947. Chris died Dec. 16, 1990.

For 21 years Katherine was co-owner of Nuway Laundry in Newton, the town’s first automatic laundry business. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of First Mennonite Church of Newton.

She is survived by three daughters, Ellagene Reiger [sic] and Marilyn Loeffler, both of Newton, and JoAnn Roberts of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Edwin Ewy of Hydro; a sister Ella Heidebrecht of Clinton, Okla.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death in four brothers and five sisters, two of who died in infancy.

Services were held at First Mennonite Church of Newton. Burial was at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.
