YOUNG MAN DROWNS ATTEMPTING TO SWIM ACROSS FARM POND

Sugarcreek, Ohio. — While on a visit here from his home at Atwood, Ind., Marlin Hochstetler, 19, drowned in an unsuccessful attempt to swim across a farm pond at the Roman J. Mullet farm near Shanesville July 3.

The youth, his uncle, Milo Miller, and Ervin Miller went for a swim in the early evening, when the visiting young man started to swim across the pond. Not an expert swimmer, he began to sink about half way across. The other two, also inexperienced swimmers, tried to rescue him but were unable to hold on to the struggling youth. His body was recovered a short time later by William Arnold.

Funeral services were held July 6 at the home of the parents, Monroe and Elma Hochstetler, near Atwood, Ind. The youth was a member of the Conservative church.
