Six-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Stepped on By Horse

Goshen, Ind. — A six-year-old Amish lad, Leroy Hochstetler, Jr. of rural Shipshewana, died in a Sturgis, Mich. hospital the evening of March 27 some hours after he was stepped on by a horse.

Leroy and an older brother were sitting astride some work horses in the barn, and as the former tried to dismount he slipped and fell into an adjoining stall. The horse in that stall became frightened and stepped on him.

The lad was able to crawl to safety and did not appear to be seriously hurt. He was taken to a physician in White Pigeon, Mich. and then released to his home. However, his condition worsened and he was taken to the hospital where he died of internal injuries.

Survivors include the parents, three sisters and four brothers.
