HENRY HOCHSTETLER

Henry Franklin, oldest son of Chris and Magdalena (Shetler) Hochstetler, was born near Kalona, Iowa, December 14, 1907, and passed away at his home in Kalona, Iowa, July 14, 1949, aged 41 years seven months.

In his youth he united with the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite church and remained a faithful and consistent member until death.

On December 25, 1927, he was united in marriage with Amy Marner, to which union three children were born: Junior of Kalona, his twin sister June (Mrs. Dwight Bender of Wellman, Iowa), and Joan at home. His parents preceded him in death in 1948, also one sister Cora in 1922.

He leaves to mourn his early departure his deeply bereaved companion, the above named children, one grandchild, Stephen Douglas Hochstetler, one brother, Ray of Kalona, two sisters, Lydia (Mrs. Alva Yoder) of Iowa City and Lala (Mrs. Marner Miller) of Goshen, Indiana, besides many other relatives and friends.

Last October he submitted to a major operation which proved to be a serious case of cancer in an advanced stage. No efforts were spared and the best of care was given him for the restoration of his health but all was seemingly of no avail.

During his sickness he suffered at times but bore it patiently with Christian courage and fortitude. In his desire for better health he also asked to have the Scripture ordinance of anointing with oil applied with a desire to serve God better if he spared his life, but it pleased the Lord otherwise.

Mr. Hochstetler was active in various capacities of church work, having served as Sunday school superintendent in both departments, church trustee, served on many committees, was a class teacher at the Sandtown Sunday School, and was a member of the Local Board of the Kansas City Mission at the time of his death. His usefulness and his kind disposition toward all won for him a large number of friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home by J. L. Hershberger and at 2 o'clock at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite church by John Y. Swartzendruber assisted by Samuel Nafziger and A. Lloyd Swartzendruber.

Several hymns were sung by Alma Brenneman, Wava Brenneman, Marjorie Yoder, Martha Troyer, Ray A. Yoder, Stanley Swartzendruber, Clark Brenneman and Ezra Troyer. Casket bearers were Ray I. Marner, Jr., Gerald Marner, Dale Brenneman, Leslie Ray Hochstetler, Duane Yoder, Elwin Miller. Yoder Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements with interment made in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Marner Miller and family, Goshen, Indiana: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Maust and children, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Maust of Bay Port, Michigan: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shettler, Mr. and Mrs. John Shettler, Omar Shettler, and Joe Maust of Pigeon, Michigan.
