Death Comes to 102-Year-Old Indiana Pioneer

CHRISTIAN C. HIRSCHY SPENT ENTIRE LIFE IN BERNE COMMUNITY

Berne. Ind. — Christian C. Hirschy, this community’s oldest resident and also the oldest in Adams county, died at his home here Dec. 1 at the age of 102. He was laid to rest following services at the West Missionary church Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3. Rev. Oscar Eicher conducted the funeral.

Mr. Hirschy lived in this vicinity throughout his life and observed its development from a primitive, frontier region to a modern community of the machine age. He was born August 3, 1848, on a farm west of Berne and was 17 years of age when the Civil War ended.

After his marriage to Katherine Schindler on March 23, 1879, they moved to a tract of timberland near Geneva which he cleared for farming. Later they returned to the farm where he was born, and lived there until 1924. His wife passed away in 1928.

Enjoyed Good Health

During more than a century of living, Mr. Hirschy enjoyed remarkably good health and was seldom ill. He was active almost until the last, and even during the past summer made occasional trips to the business district and spent some time in his garden.

He attributed his long life to moderate living and eating, hard work, and “the goodness and will of God."

During the last five weeks he was bedfast and was cared for by his daughter, Rose, with whom he made his home. Another daughter, Mrs. Walter H. Lugibihl, also assisted in his care. Other survivors are a granddaughter, Mrs. Gaylord Lehman of Royal Oak, Mich., two great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Salome Wanner and Mrs. Noah Schindler, both of Berne.
