Benjamin H. "Ben" High, 86, a former Lancaster, Pa., City Council member and longtime welding company operator, died Dec. 14, 1995, at his home after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Catherine R. Brackbill High. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Nov. 1.
Born in Halfville, he was the son of David S. and Mary E. Huber High.
After starting his own welding business in 1930, he was joined by his brother, Sandford, in establishing High Welding Co. in 1931. In 1938 he established the former Penn Welding Co., which he continued to own and operate until his retirement in 1990.
He served on the Lancaster City Council from 1971 to 1978. He also served on the boards of directors of Messiah College, Brunk Revival Corp. of Harrisonburg, Va., The Gospel Tide Hour and the Pennsylvania League of Independent Businesses. He was a charter member of Neffsville Mennonite Church, serving on various committees. He was a Boy Scout troop leader and committee member for many years.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Catherine "Kitty" Bettis and husband James of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Carol S. Stocker and husband Kenneth of Lititz; a son, H. Herbert and wife Joanne of Elizabethtown; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters, Anna H. Martin and Nettie H. Bare, both of Lititz; Lydia E. Hurst of New Providence and Rhoda H. Fisher of Rawlinsville; and a brother, Mahlon H. of Columbia.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Brunk of Harrisonburg, Va.
