JOHN M. HIEBERT

John M. Hiebert was born October 18 1894 at Bergfeld near Plum Coulee: Manitoba, and went to be with the Lord on April 16, 1972, at the age of 77, after a lengthy illness.

He was converted at 17 and that same summer was baptized by Rev. John Warkentine and received into the Grossweide MB Church. On October 27, 1918 he was married to Helena Schroeder with whom he shared 53 years of companionship. The Lord blessed this union with two sons and two daughters. They made their home on farms in various districts: Grossweide, Rosenort, 16 years at Melba, and 22 years at Lowe Farm, before retiring to Winkler in 1964.

Mr. Hiebert took a keen interest in church and community affairs. He was active in youth work at Melba and Lowe Farm. Because he loved music, he enjoyed the 40 years he spent singing in church choirs. He also served on several school boards: 11 years at Melba and several years at Lowe Farm and Heabert school districts.

His family remember his love for people, his youthful spirit and the many hours he spent reading his Bible. His desire to serve his Lord and Master by helping people led him to work as grounds supervisor and delivery man at the Winkler Bible Camp after his retirement to Winkler. He often said that those five years were the best years of his life. He also enjoyed his work as caretaker of the church activity centre.

He became ill in December, 1969 and continued in failing health until he went to be with the Lord on April 16, 1972. He is survived by his wife Helena; one daughter, Mrs. Abe C. (Elma) Klassen and her husband, Winkler; two sons, Allan and his wife Kathy of Winnipeg, Art and his wife Elva of Atikokan, Ont.; nine grandchildren; five brothers and four sisters. Two brothers, a sister and one daughter predeceased him. The funeral serves for Mr. Hiebert were conducted from the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church on April 20 with Rev. John Schmidt, Rev. James Nikkel (The Pas) and Rev. John Block (Carman) ministering. Interment took place at the Grossweide Cemetery.
